Description

CRUSADERS. Venetians in the Levant. Ducat (Gold, 20 mm, 3.51 g, 5 h), imitating Venice, struck in the name of Andrea Dandolo, uncertain mint, probably Chios. ANDR•DA(symbol)DAOI• S•N•VЄNЄTI St. Mark standing right, holding book of Gospels in his left hand and presenting banner inscribed DVX to Doge Andrea Dandolo, kneeling to left and raising his head toward the saint. Rev. •SIT•T (square)PЄ DATO•TV RЄCSI•ISTЄ•DVCAT Christ, nimbate, standing facing in mandorla with nine stars, raising his right hand in benediction and holding book of Gospels in his left. Cf. Friedberg 1221 and Paolucci 1 (for prototype). Minor traces of overstriking and with light areas of weakness, otherwise, good very fine.
