Description

UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries AD. 'Aureus' (Subargentum, 19 mm, 3.46 g, 12 h), 'Derived Gordian Group B'. ΛΛSSSIIIVV[...]SΛO - ΛΠΠSSSOIIΛΛ Laureate, draped and cuirassed imperial bust to right, seen from behind. Rev. ΛIISSSOOOΛΛ[...¨]ΛIOIIΛO Fides (?) standing front, holding signum in each hand. Aurum Barbarorum I & II -. Holed, broken, glued and with some breaks in plating, otherwise, very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection, Leu Web Auction 14, 12-13 December 2020, 1736.

The figure on the reverse of this unusual subargentum 'aureus' is most likely derived from Fides holding two signa.
