Description

★ Areobindos, a praetorian prefect of Justinian I ★

Areobindos, city prefect, circa 560s. Weight of 1 Tremissis (Glass, 15 mm, 1.46 g). Block monogram of APEOBINΔOV. Rev. Blank. D. Feissel: Le Préfet de Constantinople, les poids étalons et l'estampillage de l'argenterie au VIe et au VIIe siècle, in: Revue Numismatique 28 (1986), p. 128-129. Schlumberger, Poids de verre étalons monétiforms d'origine byzantine, no. 32 (proposed reading Euandrou, which is not possible). A very well-preserved glass weight belonging to an interesting Byzantine aristocrat. Very fine.

From a European collection, acquired before 2021.

This glass weight likely belongs Areobindos, a praetorian prefect of the East at the end of the reign of Justinian I, in 563. In historical sources, he appears as honorary ex-prefect of the city (see PLRE Areobindus 4).
