Description

John II Comnenus, 1118-1143. Hyperpyron (Gold, 35 mm, 4.33 g, 6 h), Constantinopolis, circa 1118-1122. Christ, nimbate, seated facing on throne without back, wearing pallium and colobium, raising his right hand in benediction and holding book of Gospels in his left; in fields, IC - XC. Rev. +Iω ΔЄCΠΟTH John II standing facing on the left, wearing loros, holding akakia in his right hand and patriarchal cross together with Virgin Mary, standing facing on the right, nimbate, wearing pallium and maphorium; above the head of the emperor, manus Dei; above the head of the Virgin, ΘV; in field to right, MHP. SB 1938. The flan bent and straightened and with minor graffiti, otherwise, very fine.

Ex Leu Web Auction 20, 18 July 2022, 3036 and previously from a European collection, acquired before 2021.
