Description

★ One of the great rarities in Geta's silver series ★

Geta, 209-211. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 2.91 g, 12 h), Rome, 202-209. P SEPTIMIVS GETA CAES Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Geta to right, seen from behind. Rev. MINERVAE VICTRICI Minerva advancing left, holding spear in her right hand and round shield in her left; before, coiled serpent. BMC p. 245 note 454 = Cohen 86. RIC 47. Extremely rare. Struck from somewhat worn dies and with a few minor deposits, otherwise, about very fine.

From the Red Ox Collection and the collection of the Czech musician Adolf Picek (circa 1885-1978), and formerly in the possession of an Italian banker, whose life was saved by Mr. Picek in the Battles of the Piave River on the Italian Front in 1917-1918 and who presented his savior with 'four socks of old coins' in reward.

This is one of the great rarities in Geta's silver series, with the last example having been offered for sale in Classical Numismatic Group's E-Auction 309 (2013), 322.
