Description

KINGS OF MACEDON. Philip II, 359-336 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 14.38 g, 9 h), Amphipolis, struck under Kassander, circa 316-311. Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ Young jockey, holding palm frond in his right hand and reins in his left, riding horse to right; below horse, aphlaston; below raised foreleg, pellet-in-Π. Le Rider pl. 46, 18. SNG ANS 740 ( same dies ). Struck slightly off center and with a light scratch on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. D. Löer, formed since the 1970s, privately acquired from Frank S. Robinson.
