Description

M. Volteius M.f, 78 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.63 g, 6 h), Rome. Head of Liber to right, wearing wreath of ivy and fruit. Rev. M•VOLTEI•M•F Ceres, veiled and holding two torches, standing in chariot right drawn by coiling serpents; in field to left, butterfly. Babelon (Volteia) 3. Crawford 385/3. RBW 1416 var. (differing control mark). Sydenham 776. Very rare with this lovely reverse symbol. Minor flan crack and with light corrosion, otherwise, about very fine.

From an American collection of Roman Republican and Imperatorial coins (with collector's ticket).
