Description

L. Antestius Gragulus, 136 BC. Denarius (Silver, 20 mm, 3.63 g, 12 h), Rome. GRAG Head of Roma to right, wearing crested and winged helmet; to right, star (mark of value). Rev. L•ANTES / ROMA Jupiter driving fast quadriga to right, hurling thunderbolt with his right hand and holding scepter and reins in his left. Babelon (Antestia) 9. Crawford 238/1. RBW 980. Sydenham 451. Somewhat rough and with traces of cleaning, otherwise, about very fine.

From an American collection of Roman Republican and Imperatorial coins, privately acquired in London in 2002 (with collector's and original dealer's tickets).
