Description

★ A very rare diassarion of Geta from Eiocharax ★

PHRYGIA. Eiocharax. Geta, as Caesar, 198-209. Diassarion (Bronze, 23 mm, 7.26 g, 7 h), Philiskos Aidouchos, magistrate. ΠΟ CЄΠTI ΓЄTAC KAI Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Geta to right, seen from behind. Rev. ЄΠI•ΦΙΛΙCKOY AYΔOYX•ЄIOXAPA/KЄITΩN - MOΞЄ/A Tyche standing front, head to left, holding rudder in her right hand and cornucopiae in her left. BMC 1 ( same dies ). Von Aulock, Phrygien I, 904-907 ( same dies ). Very rare. Attractive earthen deposits. Good fine.

From the collection of G. Plankenhorn (with collector's ticket), ex Hirsch 205, 22 September 1999, 917.

The Moxeanoi mentioned on the reverse of this issue were a local tribe living around Diocleia and Eiocharax. It has been suggested that the name is connected to the Armenian province Mokkc (or Mokkh or Moks), situated south of Lake Van, perhaps indicating a movement of settlers westwards to Phrygia, but this is uncertain (see von Aulock, Phrygien I, p. 52). For two other coins mentioning this tribe, see lots 1992 and 1996 above.
