★ An exceptionally well preserved damnatio memoria issue of Caracalla and Geta ★
CARIA. Stratonicaea. Caracalla, with Geta as Caesar, 198-217. Hexassarion (Bronze, 33 mm, 23.19 g, 7 h). ΑΥ ΚΑΙ [Μ] ΑΥ[...] KΑ ΠΟ CЄO (?) ΓЄ[ΤAC ...] Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Caracalla, on the left, facing laureate and draped bust of Geta (erased), on the right; between, countermark: helmeted head of Athena to right, within circular incuse; below, countermark: ΘЄΟΥ within rectangular incuse. Rev. ЄΠΙ ΠΡ•IOYΛ [...] TOY IЄΡΟΚΛЄ•CTPAΤΟИI/ꓘ϶-ΩΝ Hekate standing front, head to left, holding phiale over lighted altar in her right hand and torch in her left. SNG von Aulock 2687. For countermarks, Howgego 188 and 536. An exceptionally well preserved example from this highly interesting damnatio series. Some deposits and with scratches on the reverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.

The portrait of Geta has been erased on this coin in an act of damnatio memoriae following his murder by Caracalla in 212.
