Description

ISLAMIC, Seljuks. Rum. Rukn al-Din Sulayman II, as Malik, AH 589-592 / AD 1193-1196. Dirham (Bronze, 30 mm, 7.00 g, 9 h), uncertain mint (Tokat?), without date. Facing horseman, nimbate, riding to right and holding three-forked scepter; behind six-pointed star. Rev. Legend in Kufic in inner field and around. Broome 39B. Izmirlier 47. Scrape on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, acquired before 2021.

This type was issued by Sulayman II shortly after the death of his father, Qilich Arslan II, when he was still a Malik (prince). Some years later, Sulayman II expelled his brother, Kay Khusraw, and became the sole ruler of the Rum Sultanate.
