★ An unpublished seal of Georgios Lagos ★

Georgios Lagos, 11th century. Seal (Lead, 21 mm, 6.06 g, 12 h). Θ / Γ/E/O-P/Γ/I Nimbate bust of Saint George facing, holding spear over his right shoulder and resting shield on his left arm. Rev. +KЄ R,Θ, / TⲰ CⲰ Δ૪, / ΓЄⲰPΓHO / TO ΛAΓO in four lines; above and below, decorations. Apparently unpublished. An interesting seal mentioning an extremely rare family name. Marks and surface cracks, otherwise, very fine.

The family name, Lagos, rarely appears on seals. Cheynet published a seal of a Michael Lagos (although the reading is not entirely certain), the imperial kourator of the Manganes (Cheynet, Istanbul 2.51). According to Cheynet (REB 60, 2002, p. 277), the seal published by Stavrakos (Athens 193) belongs to a Johannes Lagos, mystolektes and notarios of the sakelle. Our seal can be added to the short list of known 11th century Lagoi.
