Description

BAKTRIA, Indo-Greek Kingdom. Menander I, circa 165/55-130 BC. Drachm (Silver, 18 mm, 2.45 g, 1 h), Indian standard, uncertain mint in Paropamisadai or Gandhara. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΣΩTHPOΣ - MENANΔPOY Diademed heroic bust of Menander I to left, seen from behind, wearing aegis over shoulder and brandishing spear. Rev. 'Maharajasa tratarasa Menamdrasa' ('of Great King Menander the Savior' in Kharoshti) Athena Promachos advancing left, holding shield on left arm and brandishing thunderbolt with her right; to right, monogram. Bopearachchi 9C. HGC 12, 189. Slightly double struck and with some flan faults and deposits on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.
