Description

L. Cossutius C.f. Sabula, 72 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.46 g, 5 h), Rome. SABVLA Winged head of Medusa to left, with serpents in her hair. Rev. L•COSSVTI•C•F Bellerophon riding on Pegasus to right, hurling spear with his right hand. Babelon (Cossutia) 1. Crawford 395/1. RBW 1436. Sydenham 790. Areas of weakness and the reverse struck somewhat off center, otherwise, very fine.

From the Red Ox Collection and the collection of the Czech musician Adolf Picek (circa 1885-1978), and formerly in the possession of an Italian banker, whose life was saved by Mr. Picek in the Battles of the Piave River on the Italian Front in 1917-1918 and who presented his savior with 'four socks of old coins' in reward.
