INDIA, Post-Mauryan (Deccan). Ishvakus. Anonymous issues, circa 227-306. Unit (Lead, 13 mm, 2.20 g). Elephant standing right. Rev. Four-orbed Ujjain symbol twice. The Coinage and History of Southern India I, pp. 100-101. Very rare. Very fine.
The Ikshvakus became independent from the Satavahanas in the eastern Deccan (modern-day Telangana and Andhra Pradesh), where they established their capital at Nagarjunikonda (Vijayapuri) in circa 227 AD. Their kingdom was eventually annexed by the Pallavas in the 4th century.
