Description

INDIA, Pre-Mauyran (Ganges Valley). Surasena Janapada. 500-350 BC. 1/2 Karshapana (Silver, 12 mm, 1.77 g), circa 400-350 BC. Stylized fish to right; below, stylized lion to right. Rev. Blank. P. Anne van't Haaff, Saurashtra Surasena Silver Punchmarked Coinage, type 1.11. Two minor banker's marks, otherwise, very fine.

The Surasena Janapada was mentioned in the great Hindu epic Ramayana. Ancient Greek writers also referred to this region as the kingdom of the Sourasenoi and named its capital Methora (Mathura).
