★ The general Tahir I ibn al-Husayn ★
ISLAMIC, Persia (Pre-Seljuq). Tahirids. Tahir I ibn al-Husayn, AH 205-207 / AD 821–822. Dirham (Silver, 25 mm, 3.36 g, 1 h), Tahirid revolt issue, citing Tahir I ibn al-Husayn as Dhu'l-Yaminayn ('possesor of two right hands' in Kufic) and the governor al-Shukr ibn Ibrahim, Herat, AH 206 = AD 821/822. SICA III, 2071. Rare. About very fine.
In AH 206, the general Tahir I ibn al-Husayn revolted against the caliph al-Ma'mun and proclaimed himself ruler of Khorasan. However, he died a few hours after the proclamation (from being poisoned?) and was succeeded by his son Talha ibn Tahir (AD 822-828). This present type was struck solely in AH 206, the year of the revolt.
