INDIA, Post-Mauryan (Deccan). Satavahanas (Andhras). Gautamiputra Satakarni, circa 53-78. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 2.23 g). RANO GOTA[MIPUTASA] SATAKANISA (in Brahmi) Three arched hill in center; above, crescent; below, river. Rev. Four-orbed Ujjain symbol with pellets in the angles and within the orbs. Mitchiner, Southern India I,142-145. Pieper 684. Rare. Holed twice, otherwise, very fine.

Traces of an arrow and a thunderbolt on the reverse of this coin show that it was overstruck on a type issued by the Western Satrap Nahapana. It is worth noting, in this regard, that king Gautamiputra defeated the Western Kshatrapas and destroyed Nahapana's dynasty sometime after AD 71.
