★ An owl with three eyes ★
ARABIA, Northwestern. Lihyan. Circa 2nd-1st centuries BC. 'Didrachm' (Bronze, 21 mm, 7.78 g, 3 h). Devolved head ot Athena to right. Rev. [A]ΘE Owl with three eyes (!) standing right, head facing; to left, olive sprig. BMC Arabia -, cf. pl. LV, 2-9 (drachms and hemidrachms). Huth 40 var. (tetradrachm). SNG ANS 1453-1454 var. (tetradrachms). Very rare. Struck from a worn obverse die, otherwise, good very fine.
What makes the reverse of this coin particularly attractive is that the die cutter has placed the Θ of the ethnic in a manner that makes the owl appear to have three eyes.
