Description

★ A lustrous stater of Alexander III from an uncertain mint ★

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Stater (Gold, 19 mm, 8.59 g, 3 h), uncertain mint in western Asia Minor. Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet decorated with a coiled serpent. Rev. AΛEΞANΔΡOΥ Nike standing front, head to left, with her wings spread, holding laurel wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; to left, illegible monogram. Price -. A beautiful, boldly struck and lustrous piece. Struck from a somewhat worn reverse die with some breaks, otherwise, good extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

Unfortunately, the die break on the reverse of this beautiful stater seriously hampers the reading of the monogram and hence makes an attribution quite challenging. This cataloguer could not come up with a fitting Price-number, but the style is reminiscent of issues from Miletos, thus pointing towards a mint in western Asia Minor.
