★ The legendary warrior King Prithviraj III Chauhan ★

INDIA, Medieval. Chauhans of Delhi and Ajmer. Prithviraja III, circa 1149-1192. Jital (Bronze, 16 mm, 3.37 g). SRI PRITHVIRAJA DEVA ('Lord Prithviraja Deva' in Devangari) Horseman to right. Rev. ASAVARI SRI SAMANTA DEVA ('Strength of Heaven Lord Samanta Deva' in Devangari) Bull seated to left. Deyell, Living Without Silver, 225. An attractive example. Light deposits, otherwise, good very fine.

Prithviraj III Chauhan was a legendary King of Delhi and Ajmer who decisively defeated the Sultan Muhammad of Ghor in 1191, only to be defeated and killed himself in the following year by Muslim invaders. Prithviraj's fame as a warrior hero of the Rajputs lives on in the epic poem Prithviraj Raso composed by Chand Bardai in the 13th or 14th century.
