Description

ISLAMIC, Anatolia & al-Jazira (Post-Seljuk). Artuqids (Kayfa & Amid). Nur al-Din Muhammad, AH 570-581 / AD 1174-1185. Dirham (Bronze, 27 mm, 13.34 g, 1 h), Hisn, AH 578 = 1182/3. Large diademed male head to left within beaded circle; around, mint and date. Rev. in inner field, 'Malik al-Umara Muhiyy / al-Adil Nur al-Din / Muhammad ibn Qara Arsla/n ibn Artuq Nasir / al-Imam al-Nasir / li-din Allah'; in outer margin, Mal'un man / yu'ayyiruhu'; all in Kufic. Spengler & Sayles 11. A lovely example. Struck on a somewhat short flan as usual, with a minor edge crack and with light scratches, otherwise, good very fine.

From an important collection of Ayyubid and post-Seljuk coins.

The head on the obverse of this issue was copied from tetradrachms of the Seleukid King Antiochos IV (175-164 BC) or Antiochos V (164-161 BC).
