Description

★ A very rare imitation of an aureus of Constantius I ★

UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Subaeratus, 20 mm, 5.43 g, 12 h), 'Tetrarchic Adventus Group A'. Imitating Constantius I, 293-305. CONSTANTIVS NOB CAESAR Laureate head of Constantius I to right. Rev. [MARTI] PATRI / SMN Mars advancing right, holding spear in his right hand and trophy over his left shoulder. Aurum Barbarorum I & II -. Cf. Calicó 4852 (for prototype). Obolos 11 (2018), 676 (misdescribed as an official issue!). Holed and with minor breaks in plating, otherwise, fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

Imitations of Constantius I are very rare among the Aurum Barbarorum, with this being only the second example known to this cataloguer (the first appeared in Obolos 11 (2018), 676, where it was misdescribed as an official Roman aureus!).
