★ Eirene Radene, chief lady-in-waiting of the empress ★
Eirene Radene, zoste (chief lady-in-waiting of the empress), 2nd half of 11th century. Seal (Lead, 34 mm, 20.37 g, 12 h). [ MHP ]-ΘV Nimbate Mother of God “Episkepsis”, raising both hands in prayer, medallion of Christ in front. Rev. +ΘKЄ R,Θ, / TH CH Δ૪Λ, / ЄIPHNH Z[Ⲱ]/CTH [TH P]A/ΔHNH in five lines. SBS VIII p. 145, no. 26 = BBÖ II p. 44, note 114. An interesting seal of a Byzantine noble woman. Somewhat rough and with areas of weakness, otherwise, very fine.
The dignity of zoste patrikia was awarded to the empress’ chief attendant. Her high status is evident from the fact that she had the right to dine at the imperial table, together with the patriarch and a few high courtiers. 'zoste' was the only truly female dignity at the court, as she held her rank in her own right, independent of the rank of her husband.
