Description

Heraclius, with Heraclius Constantine, 610-641. Follis (Bronze, 22 mm, 4.92 g, 7 h), probably a contemporary imitation of a Heraclius follis of the 'Neapolis' series struck during the Arab Byzantine war. Date illegible, after 634. Heraclius, on the left, standing facing in military attire, with moustache and long beard, wearing crown surmounted by cross, holding long cross in his right hand; on the right, Heraclius Constantine standing facing, short bearded, wearing crown surmounted by cross and chlamys, holding globus cruciger in his right hand; between their heads, K. Rev. Large M between [A]/N/N/O and X/[...]; below, illegible letter (perhaps 'Γ'); in exergue, CON. DOC -. Cf. MIB X23 (for prototype of obverse). SB -. About very fine.

The obverse of this coin is based on the very rare issues struck in Neapolis (see below, lots 1580-1582).
