Description

Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 22 mm, 3.00 g, 3 h), a contemporary imitation of a Constantine I from Treveri overstruck on an official follis of Licinius I, uncertain mint. Helmeted and cuirassed bust of Constantine to left, holding spear over right shoulder and shield; around traces of imitative legend and of the undertype. Rev. Two victories holding inscribed shield over altar; around traces of imitative legend and of the undertype. Cf. RIC 50 (Siscia, for possible prototype). Heavy traces of overstriking, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of a Swiss scholar, formed over the past thirty years.

This interesting imitation of a 'VICTORIAE LAETAE PRINC PERP'-issue of Constantine I was overstruck on an official 'IOVI CONSERVATORI'-follis of Licinius I.
