Description

★ The only issue ever struck by the Koinon of Paphlagonia ★

PAPHLAGONIA. Koinon of Paphlagonia. Domitian, 81-96. Assarion (Bronze, 22 mm, 5.80 g, 1 h). ΔΟΜΙΤΙΑΝΟϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ ϹЄΒΑϹΤΟϹ Laureate head of Domitian to right. Rev. •ΚΟΙ•/•ΝΟΝ ΠΑ•/ΦΛΑΓΟΝΙ/•ΑϹ• in four lines. RPC II 1629 (2 specimens). Extremely rare, apparently the third known example. Very fine.

This is the only issue ever struck by the Koinon of Paphlagonia, which is otherwise only attested in a few inscriptions. Little is known of its history, but the title 'metropolis' held by the Paphlagonian Pompeiopolis suggests that this is where the Koinon met.
