INDIA, Gupta Empire. First Dynasty. Kumaragupta I Mahendraditya (?), circa 413-455. Drachm (Silver, 14 mm, 2.14 g, 7 h). Bust of Kumarugupta as Makugupta to right, wearing headdress and earring. Rev. PARAMA BHAGAVATA MAHARAJADHIRAJA SRI MAKUGUPTA MAHENDRATIYA ('Great King, Lord Makugupta Mahendratiya the highest stage devotee [of Vishnu]' in Brahmi) Garuda standing facing on cloud with spread wings. Unpublished and of great interest. About extremely fine.

The name Makugupta, which is clearly visible on the reverse, is either a new epithet for Kumaragupta himself or the new name for a hitherto unattested Gupta King who ruled after him.
