This issue was struck in celebration of Diocletian's vicennalia on 20 November 303 and presumably distributed as a donative to important officers. It was very likely on this occasion that Diocletian informed his colleague in office that he planned to retire together with him, an epochal event which took place somewhat later, on 1 May 305.
