★ An exceptional denarius of Julius Caesar, ex Numismatica Ars Classica 6, 11 March 1993, 320 ★

Julius Caesar, 49-44 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 4.01 g, 6 h), military mint moving with Caesar in Africa, 48-47. Diademed head of Venus to right. Rev. CAESAR Aeneas advancing left, carrying palladium in his right hand and Anchises on his left shoulder. Babelon (Julia) 10. Crawford 458/1. RBW 1600. Sydenham 1013. An exceptional piece, lustrous and with beautiful iridescent toning. Virtually as struck.
