Description

★ An exceptional tetradrachm of Caracalla from Gadara ★

SYRIA, Decapolis. Gadara. Caracalla, 198-217. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 13.34 g, 6 h), 215-217. AYT KAI ANTⲰNINOC CЄB Laureate head of Caracalla to right, with slight drapery on his left shoulder. Rev. ΔHMAPX ЄΞ YΠATO Δ Eagle with spread wings standing facing, head to left and holding wreath in beak; between the eagle's legs, the Charites (the Three Graces) standing within laurel wreath. Prieur 1587 var. (YΠAT). Lustrous and exceptional. Good extremely fine.

An interesting minor detail about this coin is the small O which has been squeezed in into the reverse legend at a later point, a variety unknown to Prieur.
