★ An unpublished Galatian stater ★
CELTIC, Galatia. Uncertain tribe. Circa early to mid 3rd century BC. Stater (Gold, 18 mm, 8.13 g, 7 h), imitating Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet decorated with a torque. Rev. AE:ANA[...] (sic!) Celticized Nike standing front, head to left, with her wings spread, holding laurel wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left. Dembski -. Flesche -. Lanz -. Apparently unpublished. A very interesting issue of lovely Celtic style. A few light marks, otherwise, extremely fine.
Exactly when and where this interesting stater was struck is unclear: it certainly comes from Celtic groups in Asia Minor, but whether it was struck by migrating warrior bands in the 270s and 260s or somewhat later by the settled down Tektosages, Trokmoi and Tolistobogoi is difficult to say. In any case, it hardly dates any later than the mid 3rd century.
