Johannes was a major bureaucrat serving a person who held the even higher office of grand kourator. There were several grand kourators at any one time, mostly in the provinces, but the seal does not specify which grand kourator Johannes assisted. The dignity of kouboukleisios indicates that Johannes himself was a cleric, as this was an honor bestowed on churchly, notably patriarchal chamberlains. Evidently, this did not prevent Johannes from following a career in state administration.
