CAES ANTIOCH COL / S R Hexastyle temple with shield in pediment set on base; within, statue of Mên standing facing, head to right and left foot on bucranium, holding scepter in his right hand and Nike on globe in his left, leaning left on column; at feet to left, rooster. BMC -. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Leypold -. SNG Paris -. SNG PFPS -. SNG Righetti -. SNG von Aulock -. Extremely rare and of great interest. Nearly very fine.
The temple shown on this coin is not the usual one of Fortuna (SNG Paris 1220), but of Mên, who appears prominently on many coins from Antiochia. It is thus very likely that the usual rendering of Mên on coins of the city represents an actual cult statue set up in the god's temple.
