HUNNIC TRIBES, Uncertain. AE (Copper, 14 mm, 0.77 g), Gandhara, circa 4th-8th century. Facing bull's head. Rev. JA[...] (in Brahmi) Knot of Herakles. Vondrovec, Type GC-G44. Rare. Light marks, otherwise, very fine.
The iconography on this particular 'Gandharan Copper' reflects both Indian and Greek traditions: the bull's head on the obverse was especially popular in Indian culture (the Alchon king Mihirakula even used inscriptions like JAYA VRISHA = 'May the bull win' (in Brahmi) on his copper coins), whereas the knot of Herakles on the reverse is an old Hellenistic symbol referring to the knot the hero was using to tie the skin of the Nemean lion around his neck.
