An early Commander’s Cross for military, 90x55 mm, in GOLD and
red enamel on both sides; dark-blue enameled centre medallion with separately applied portrait
of the saint in Gold, within dark-toned, chiselled outer circlet; reverse medallion also in gold with
blue enamelled centre; hollow-made trophy-of-arms suspension, with grooved ribbon ring; original, full length neck ribbon; in the original, red morocco, fitted case of issue, with gold embossed coat-of arms
of Pope Pius IX’s coat-of-arms on the lid.
A rare piece of the finest, roman manufacture,
