SERBIA & KINGDOM OF YUGOSLAVIA
Medal for Zealous Service for Ladies
(awarded in 1876–1878)
Of the rare, transitional type from the first form made as a brooch and the definitive one worn as
a medal, 61x40 mm, gilt Silver, hollow-made, the obverse with the monogram “N” of Princess
Natalija in gold, affixed on a red enameled field, within a blue enamelled riband with Cyrillic
inscription meaning “For aiding wounded and sick soldiers in the wars of the years 1876–77-78”;
the whole enclosed within a green enameled laurel wreath; the upper part, with enamelled
princely crown; plain reverse, with the signs of the removed pins; the upper part, fitted with girl
silver loop and ribbon ring; with the original ladies’ bow ribbon.
A very rare medal, awarded in a limited number of pieces; this transitional type is perhaps the
rarest.
Provenance: The Collection of World Orders and Decorations of the American Numismatic Society,
then auctioned in London by Morton & Eden, May 24th–25th, 2006.
