Royal Order of St. Isabel
A late 19th Century Badge of the Order in gold: oval medallion made as a
wreath of roses, leaves and scrolls tied as an upper bow, surmounted by a
seraphim’s head within leaves; below, a pale blue enamelled (a small,
surface chip), chiselled gold scroll with motto “PAUPERUM SOLATIO” in
gold lettering and two stylized flowers; an inner laurel wreath enclosing
the centre medallion in gold and white enamelled details with applied,
polychrome enamelled scene of Saint Isabel handing alms to a beggar; the
reverse with richly chiselled oval medallion with gold royal cipher on
white enamelled field above a deep-sea blue enamelled scroll with the
date “MDCCCI” in gold, roman numerals; pale blue enamelled outer circlet
with inscription “REAL ORDEM DE SANTA IZABEL”. Large, crown suspension
with red-and-green enamelled “jewels” and red enamelled inner cap;
large, gold suspension ring, through the upper orb.
A very rare, magnificent badge of this high order, instituted in 1801
and limited to 26 living ladies of the highest nobility, as a reward to their
continuous and meritorious assistance to orphans and poor people Dim.: 90,0x51,0 mm (incl. crown suspension). I- RR!
