Small 8vo [17.5 by 10.5 cm], somewhat later russet and gold decorative boards, with foliated pattern surrounding caricature busts . (8), 124 pages; 2 engraved plates of coins, folding out to quarto size. Moderate spotting; some browning. Very good or better. A scarce volume, attributed by Dekesel to Erasmus Froelich and included in revised form in Froelich’s Quatuor tentamina of 1737. This first issue of this work credits Ludwig de Biel as only the promotore of the work (i.e., the head of the academic examination committee), while the second issue credits him as auctore. The famous and prolific Jesuit numismatist Erasmus Froelichis perhaps best known today for being the teacher of Joseph Eckhel. Babelon 114–115: “Erasmus Froelich (1700–1758), librarian at the Theresianum at Vienna and Professor of Archaeology, valued numismatics above all else, and his writings, although since surpassed by Eckhel’s, were responsible for significant progress in the field.” De Biel (1697–1771) was a Jesuit scholar noted for his biblical writings, which included a four-volume Hebrew bible published in 1743.
