Description

Woodward, W. Elliot. CATALOGUE OF THE NUMISMATIC COLLECTIONS OF FRANK DIETRICH, OF HARRISBURG, PENN. AND S.H. MORGAN OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY. New York, April 19–21, 1882. 76 pages; 1900 lots; 2 fine heliotype plates. Hand-priced in ink. [bound with] Woodward, W. Elliot. SIX ADDITIONAL AUCTION CATALOGUES. Includes: Gerdts, Pecker, Mason, et al. (December 16–19, 1879) hand-priced in red; Emery, Taylor & Loomis (March 9–12, 1880); J.N.T. Levick (May 26–29, 1884) hand-priced in red; Edwin Wight (February 24–25, 1885) hand-priced in red; J.C. Randall (September 15–17, 1885); and J.S. Twining (April 27–29, 1886). All seven catalogues bound in one volume. 8vo, later red cloth, gilt. Near fine. The Dietrich-Morgan sale is Adams 46, with plates. Rare: one of fifty copies issued with plates, though few seem to have survived. Seldom offered. The two plates mostly depict rare Hard Times tokens, along with two 1793 cents, a few rare United States silver coins, and a few other tokens. In a lengthy introduction to the Hard Times token section, Woodward provides previously unpublished background information on the manufacture of the series and, for the first time ever, provides illustrations for many of the tokens. Davis 1168 (“No sale recorded.”). The other catalogues present are Adams 25, 27, 67, 71, 78 and 83, and include the highly important J.N.T. Levick sale of 1884. Ex Donald M. Miller Library; ex Wayne Homren Library.
