Low, Lyman H. CATALOGUE OF THE VALUABLE AND HIGHLY INTERESTING COLLECTION OF COINS, MEDALS AND TOKENS, THE PROPERTY OF BENJAMIN BETTS, OF BROOKLYN, N.Y. CONSISTING OF EARLY AMERICAN MEDALS, STORE CARDS OF NEW YORK CITY, AND OTHERS, EMBRACING MOST OF THE RAREST KNOWN; BADGES AND DECORATIONS OF THE WAR WITH MEXICO AND WAR OF THE REBELLION, WITH MEDALETS OF DAVIS AND BEAUREGARD, TOGETHER WITH A MATCHLESS LINE OF SPANISH-AMERICAN PROCLAMATION PIECES, FROM PHILIP V TO ISABELLA II, INCLUDING SEVERAL UNPUBLISHED, AND AN UNRIVALLED MEXICAN ARRAY OF THE ISSUES OF MORELOS, AUGUSTIN AND MAXIMILIAN, WITH MANY PATTERN COINS OF THE FIRST REPUBLIC. New York, January 11–12, 1898. 108, (2) pages; 1183 lots; 5 plates [2 halftones, 3 line art]. [bound with] Low, Lyman H. PART I. CATALOGUE OF THE EXTENSIVE AND VALUABLE COLLECTION OF COPPER COINS AND TOKENS, THE PROPERTY OF COLONEL WALTER CUTTING OF PITTSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS... New York, May 23–24, 1898. iv, 76, (2) pages; 993 lots; 3 photogravure plates. [bound with] Low, Lyman H. PART II. CATALOGUE OF THE EXTENSIVE AND VALUABLE COLLECTION OF COPPER COINS AND TOKENS, THE PROPERTY OF COL. WALTER CUTTING, OF PITTSFIELD, MASS., CONSISTING IN PART OF THE REMAINDER OF THE SERIES OF ENGLISH TOKENS DESCRIBED BY CONDER.... New York: Collectors’ Club, November 28, 1898. 62 pages; 743 lots; 2 halftone plates. Three catalogues, bound in one volume. Tall 8vo, later blue cloth, gilt. Occasional wear or discoloration; generally near fine. Adams 37, 39 and 41, all of them with plates. The Betts sale is probably Low’s most significant, and he held over 200. Rated A+ overall by Adams, and A for medals, tokens, literature, comments, “Rest of Europe,” and the Americas. Of unquestioned importance to Mexican and Latin American numismatics, but also essential for store cards, early American (Betts) medals, and for the consignor’s fine numismatic library. Many of these areas matched perfectly with Low’s own interests, resulting in a very finely executed catalogue with much information to be found within. The two photographic plates are of good quality (though halftones), and the line drawings are also well done. Davis 639. The first Cutting sale is rated A– overall by Adams: “Bout de l’Isle patterns. Unique Conn. 1¢. Definitive Conders, some unique. Extensive siege pieces.” The second is rated B: “More Conders, many unpublished. Fine library. Gold 1856-D $1.” Both of them are seldom offered. Ex Donald M. Miller Library; ex Wayne Homren Library.
