Eckfeldt, Jacob R., and William E. Du Bois. A MANUAL OF GOLD AND SILVER COINS OF ALL NATIONS, STRUCK WITHIN THE PAST CENTURY.... Philadelphia: Published at the Assay Office of the Mint, 1842. Small 4to, original black embossed cloth, front cover lettered within a foliated border surmounted by an eagle, all in gilt. Finely engraved frontispiece title engraving of the Mint building; (4), iv, (5)–220 pages; 16 plates of coins, all attractively engraved via the medal-rule machine on coated paper, with original tissue guards. Original owner’s 1842-dated signature in ink on front flyleaf. Spine worn at head; corners worn; very good. The first edition of this landmark work in American numismatics, in a scarce original binding variant, and in above-average condition. For nearly two decades, it was the only practical guide available to American coin collectors. It was also the first work to illustrate the 1804 dollar and was one of the earliest works to combine photographic techniques, electrotyping and the medal-rule machine for illustrative purposes.
