[Counterfeiting]. Thompson, Robert. ORIGINAL WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORDS RELATING TO A COUNTERFEITING CASE. Undated (c. 1930). Includes: 1) original 19-page typewritten account of the Hogan Family of counterfeiters and the investigation into their activities led by Secret Service Operative Frank C. Reilly [typescript is numbered 1–20 without a page 15, but reading the unbroken narrative indicates that the numbering is simply in error]; 2) a second copy of the written account; 3) a photograph showing the Jim Hogan house at which Detective Paul Gottfried and Jim Hogan were shot and killed in 1919; 4) a photograph showing the house where Howard Hogan was apprehended in 1926; 5) photographic mugshot of Howard Hogan; 6) photographic mugshot of Jim Hogan under earlier name of John Hogan; 6) partly torn and rather worn photograph of Frank C. Reilly; 7) reproduced photograph of Detective Gottfried; 8) reproduced photograph of Detective Cassidy; and 9) reproduced photograph of Detective McKinley. Material housed in archival sleeves and arranged in a custom-made album folder. Generally near fine, with some exceptions. An original article by St. Paul Dispatch reporter Robert Thompson on the criminal activities of the Hogan Family of coin counterfeiters, the investigation of them led by Secret Service Operative Frank C. Reilly, and the death or capture of various members of the family, accompanied by photographs presumably intended to run with the article. It is unknown to us if the article was ever published. Regardless, this is an unusual and highly interesting collection of materials relating to a known group of coin counterfeiters. Ex MJS Library.
