Collins, Jack [photographer]. PHOTOGRAPHS OF HALF CENTS AND LARGE CENTS FROM NOTABLE COLLECTIONS. As follows: HALF CENTS, 1793–1805 & LARGE CENTS, 1793–1803. SELECTIONS FROM THE GARRETT FAMILY COLLECTION. June 1974. A group of two hundred eight color 35 mm slides. Housed in twelve clear vinyl three-ring slide sheets. LARGE CENTS, 1793–1798. SELECTIONS FROM THE GEORGE H. CLAPP / AMERICAN NUMISMATIC SOCIETY COLLECTION. New York, August 1985. Thirty-three black-and-white 35 mm negatives. Accompanied by thirty-three corresponding contact proof sheets comprising various exposures of more than 250 different large cents. Attributions, pedigrees, and die states were recorded in each frame during photography by Walter Breen. LARGE CENTS, 1793–1820. WILLIAM J. BAREFORD COLLECTION. 1982. Three black-and-white 35 mm negatives. Accompanied by three corresponding contact proof sheets depicting 92 images (both sides of 20 different coins in various exposures). All materials generally fine; vinyl pages are not archival and should probably be replaced. Useful photographs of some extraordinary coins, taken by one of our best coin photographers. The first set of photographs depicts both sides of 21 half cents and 83 large cents from the Garrett Family collection. Jack Collins wrote of the ANS photographs that “The photography took three days at the American Numismatic Society, in New York, with Breen selecting the pieces that he wanted to illustrate for his Encyclopedia of United States Large Cents, 1793–1814, which he was then compiling. The reason that the photography wasn’t completed through the cents of 1814, was that by the third day, we had evidently worn out our welcome with Leslie Elam, who closed down our photographic operations, and essentially escorted us out.” Of the Bareford coins, Collins wrote: “The collection was formed by Harold Bareford, then bequeathed to his son, William J. Bareford. The quality of the 20 different coins is superb, with a choice Uncirculated 1793 Chain AMERI. cent [Sheldon-1], choice Wreath cents of S-5 and S-6, and almost all of the other pieces through 1820 are Mint State.” Ex Kolbe Sale 65, lots 148, 153 and 158.
