Jules Florange (1863–1936) held his first sale in 1890. He was studious by nature and a born collector, and the role of professional numismatist came readily. He founded the journal Aréthuse and formed one of the classic collections of jetons. In 1922, he joined forces with Louis Ciani (1894–1929), a brilliant younger numismatist who had begun holding sales in 1920. Ciani wrote a classic work on French coinage and was highly regarded as a cataloguer. The partnership lasted until Ciani’s untimely death in 1929.
