In a Distinctive Custom Binding
Dittrich, K. ANTIKE MÜNZEN AUS OLBIA UND PANTIKAPÄUM. Prag: Artia, 1959. 4to, later full tan calf; front cover with hand-drawn depiction of a drachm of Olbia with a lyre reverse; title on both cover and spine etched by hand; original pictorial jacket mounted on pastedowns. Extremities somewhat discolored; near fine. This volume has been treated to a remarkable binding by Dionysis Valassis, who used the design on Plate 35 as the basis for his cover art, which was presumably drawn using an acidic solution to etch the design into the surface of the leather. The catalogue itself records 121 of the unusual coins of Olbia and 157 of the beautiful coins of Panticapaeum, two important cities on the coast of the Black Sea. An oversize volume featuring greatly enlarged illustrations of the coins. Clain-Stefanelli 2659. Daehn 3741.
