Folio, later full tan morocco; spine with four raised bands, lettered in brown; brown endpapers. viii, 217, (3) pages; 16 very fine autotype plates of coins with text. Fine. A well-preserved and specially bound copy of this superbly illustrated classic work. Clain-Stefanelli 3442. Daehn 941: “Focuses on the artistic development of coinage in relation to other works of art. Includes brief discussions on the origin and function of coinage, minting techniques, inscriptions, monetary alliances, and mother-city/colony relationships. Coin types are then analyzed focusing on their mythological content and artistic style. Includes chapters on the religious character of coin types, symbols, and the use of coins in archaeological studies. The stylistic analysis is divided into time periods and geographical areas. Includes a table which correlates the plates to the section of the text in which each coin is discussed.” Grierson 59.
