Babelon 127: “Father Joseph Hilarius Eckhel was born at Enzersfeld-unter-Enns in Austria, 13 January 1737, and died in Vienna, 16 May 1798. He was introduced to medals by Father Khell, whom he was to succeed as Keeper of the Jesuits’ numismatic collection. Upon his return to Vienna in 1774, following a long educative stay in Italy, Eckhel was made Director of the Imperial Cabinet and Professor of Antiquities. He had no interest in fame; his rather modest career is represented by his admirable numismatic publications.” This is one of his earlier works, pre-dating the Doctrina (which began publication in 1792). Dekesel E37 (Issue 1).
