An 1810 Attempt at a Numismatic Periodical?
Visconti, Alessandro. MEDAGLIE ANTICHE INEDITE COLLE DICHAIRAZIONI / MÉDAILLES ANTIQUES INÉDITES AVEC LES EXPLICATIONS. Nos. 1 and 2, complete (Roma: Stamperia di Paolo Salviucci e Figlio, 1810). Small 4to, later tan full morocco; spine with two raised bands, lettered in brown; brown endpapers; original printed paper covers bound in. (3), 39 leaves printed in Italian, with identically numbered facing pages printed in French; 3 well-engraved plates of ancient coins. Near fine. A rare and fascinating production. Apparently planned as a periodical, but as its only two numbers are devoted solely to the work cited, it seems more reasonable to list it here. Babelon mentions Visconti’s 1805 Indicazione della medaglie antiche del signor Pietro Vitali (page 122), but the present publication appears largely to have been forgotten.
