Svoronos’s Massive Athenian National Museum
Svoronos, J.N. DAS ATHENER NATIONALMUSEUM. Deutsche Ausgabe von Dr. W. Barth. Athens: Beck & Barth, 1903–1908, 1908–1911, 1937. Bound in three volumes. Folio [31.5 by 25 cm], later matching tan quarter morocco with brown cloth sides; spine with six raised bands, lettered in black; brown endpapers; original front printed card cover to third volume bound in. (6), 285, (3) + (4), 287–510, (4) + 511–683, (5) pages; 100 + 100 + 40 [total 240] exceptionally fine plates. Third volume includes some pages and plates in photocopy: page 607 to the end are in photocopy, as is Plate 221. Bindings somewhat rubbed; library markings to title pages; third volume with blank leaves added for bulk. Third volume has marginal repairs to several leaves. Very good, overall. Svoronos’s massive, periodically published work on the holdings of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Partly a catalogue, partly a scholarly commentary on the collections, Svoronos’s coverage focuses on two areas: the Antikythera mechanism and ancient reliefs (excluding grave reliefs). The photographic plates are outstanding. Very rare.
